wharf to wharf Guided walk

Join our Guided Wharf to Wharf Walk,

staying in comfort at Tanja Lagoon Camp

The Wharf to Wharf Walk is a journey through history, crossing the ancient lands of the Yuin people, between two historic wharfs on the Sapphire Coast, NSW.

It's a walk for coast lovers, stretching 27km along the coast between the iconic Merimbula and Tathra Wharfs. Wander the hidden trails that snake along rugged clifftops through Bournda National Park and discover spectacular headlands, secluded bays, lakes, freshwater lagoons and long, isolated beaches.

If thats not enough... We have added a day of walking in the magical Mimosa Rocks National Park. This day includes more remote beaches and a crossing of one of the most beautiful lagoons you have ever seen!

Our guided Wharf to Wharf Walk offers small group walking, expert local knowledge and delicious local produce. The walk is fully supported so all you have to carry is a day pack.

Accommodation is at the stunning Tanja Lagoon Camp. There is a mix of safari tents and cabins overlooking a coastal lagoon with a communal area to share meals and time by the fire each day.

This walk is challenging in parts, with some rough surfaces and beach walking. A moderate level of fitness is required.

As with all of our walks, this itinerary can be customised for your group. Please get in touch so we can help you walk your way.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1 - 15km

Merimbula Wharf to Hobart Beach

We pick you up at your accommodation in Tathra at around 8am and transfer to the start of the Wharf to Wharf walk at Merimbula Wharf (built in 1903) . At the Wharf we will take time to enjoy the view to the South and brief everyone on the days ahead. We will provide you with lunch to carry in your daypack to be enjoyed along the way.

After a quick wander through the quiet streets of Merimbula, we emerge at Short Point to view our way North. Here we make our way onto a trail through the sand dunes behind Short Point Beach for a time before enjoying some open beach walking towards Tura Headland. We will traverse the headland and explore rockpools and the striking geology of the area before continuing through thick Melaleuca forest to Dolphin Cove. From here we assess the tide and choose to walk along the beach or in the Banksia forest along the cliff tops before entering Bournda National Park.

We will take in views of the rugged and exposed Bournda Island, before crossing the mouth of Bournda Lagoon and making our way into thick Melaleuca forest to skirt the shores of freshwater Bondi Lake, before arriving at the Hobart Beach campground on the shores of Wallagoot Lake. From here we will jump in the bus and head to Tanja Lagoon Camp where you will have time to relax before a scrumptious dinner based on local seasonal produce.

Day 2 - 13km

Bithry Inlet to Mogareeka

Starting the day with breakfast in our rooms, we transfer South to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka. We explore Fords Headland before dropping down into Moon Bay and over the hill to the sapphire blue Nelsons Lagoon which we will cross where safe to do so. Sometimes this crossing requires swimming however we will have a kayak on hand to assist where needed. After drying off we make our way along the deserted Cowdroys Beach before entering a Spotted Gum forest and along GIllards Beach to admire the rock formations. We leave the beach at Middle Lagoon and climb through southern Mahogany tress before dropping back down into Tanja Lagoon Camp for the evening. There will be time to relax around the fire before we enjoy another dinner together watching the kangaroos graze as the sun sets.

Day 3 - 14km

Hobart Beach to Tathra Wharf

After breakfast in our rooms, we get packed up and check out of our accommodation before transferring to Hobart Beach to continue our trek North along this amazing coastline. Today's walk is a little more rugged and rocky, exploring secluded coves and clifftops. We will stop for lunch along the way before arriving at Kianinny Bay with a great opportunity for a swim. From here we continue along the cliff tops of Tathra to Tathra Headland and finally Tathra Wharf to finish the Wharf to Wharf walk.
